New Wacom Intuos 5 Touch Tablet Programming Suggestions
Often when I am teaching, I show how use the Wacom Intuos Tablets. This tablet allows me to set a lot of the keystrokes I use on the tablet itself. This saves me time when I am working on retouching my images. I thought I would share these settings in a blog post.
First, this is how I figured out how to program the tablet settings. It is a good idea to do this yourself so you can customize it to your personal workflow. To get my most used keyboard shortcuts, I wrote down each shortcut as a list on a sheet of paper. This allowed me to only consider the shortcuts I used the most and not the ones that were used only occasionally. Then, after listing all the keyboard shortcuts I used, I set aside two days when I was only editing images. With the list of keyboard shortcuts next to my keyboard, I placed a “tic” mark next to each shortcut I used in those two days. I edited a large variety of images so I got a good cross sampling of my work flow with shortcuts.
The following is a visual with short programming tips, along with a listing of my most used shortcuts, what I programmed on the tablet.

Notice: The New Wacom Intuos 5 does not have display windows built into the tablet. Instead there is a new Express View that will show on your computer screen. The ExpressKeys have a raised portion that is either a dot or a dash. The Express View will also show the dot or the dash as well as what key you are presently touching with an orange highlight color. Pressing down on the ExpressKey will apply the speed key command you have programmed for that key. (See below). To activate the Express View for the Touch Ring, click on the middle toggle button for Express View.
Below are examples of the ExpressKeys and Touch Ring with programming in an Express View.

Nicely Done! It is always wonderful when someone who truly takes advantage of the features says how cool they are. When I say it it just sounds like a sales pitch. I use my new Intuos5 more than its predecessor just because of touch and the ExpressView. Mice… beware!
I am new to the art business. What size to get is my problem. I have a 27″ monitor, but think the small tablet is too small, but the large tablet does not fit on my desk. I am considering the medium tablet, but there are no reviews that I have found to address which size to buy.
@foundationsbuilder – This is a personal preference and depends on the amount of desktop space you have. I have found that the medium size Intuos tablet is just right in size.
Great article, thank you! I have a quick question. Do you know if there is a way to program an express key (or any key) to access a Nik plugin? I use Viveza and Color Efex alot, and wondered if I could have a key set up for each.
Thanks!
Dave
This is the question I have as well. Did you get an answer?
Dear Dave,
Yes you can easily do this with the Photoshop Actions I have attached.
Here are the commands I recommend you assign these actions.
Shift F1 is Dfine 2
Shift F2 is Viveza 2
Shift F3 is Color Efex Pro 4
Shift F4 is Silver Efex Pro 2
Shift F5 is Sharpener Pro 3 Output
Shift F6 is HDR Efex Pro 2 single image on a separate layer
You may assign the actions to different keys as you feel fit and record them to the either a radial button or to individual keys on the tablet. I usually use the radial menu for my action assignments.

Dave,
Please send me your email address so I can send you a copy of the actions I created. This post does not allow me to attach the actions that were created for you to assign your keys to.
Please send your email to janicewendt@google.com.
Thank you,
