Continued Support for Nik’s Pro Plug-ins
In a post to the Google+ community earlier today, Google Senior Vice President, Engineering Vic Gundotra reaffirmed the company’s support for Nik Software’s professional product line. In the post, Gundotra said, “we’re going to continue offering and improving Nik’s high-end tools and plug-ins.”

The Nik Software Team

This is GREAT news !!
Please let it be true !!
That seems to be great news…but he did not say who will continue – Nik Support US and EU or Google+
A little worried. Nik has been an awesome software company for photographers. Google is now at war with Apple. Most photography is done on Apple products. Although, Google is an awesome company as well, where will this merge take us, and how much more expense is headed our way? Just thinking!
Wonderful sound bite… but, what does it really mean? Will the Nik team continue on? Or will this be Google googlizing Nik software (not for the better I would imagine)?
Time will tell how screwed we are.
Will Nik’s wonderful education and customer service go the way of google or will google keep the best part of Nik plug ins- the people and the service who make sure everyday that those of us who use Nik products create the most beautiful images we can imagine!
At least there was a response from google with respect to the plugins. A little late but still a response. Still the how was not mentioned. If they can keep the developers and photographers can still get further updates of the pro products it would be OK. I hope they do not make them cloud based only. I know everything in the future points that way but you should not be forced to store in the cloud and pay for the space. Client based products should always be an option.
I don’t think those who say this is “great” really understand the implications of this acquisition and how it will potentially affect pro photographers. It’s a bit naive to think google will innovate and keep up the support as the independent Nik did. Only time will tell and we can only hope for the best.
The only ones that are winners with this aquisition is OnOne Software. Once Googleized, Nik can not be undone. Google has zero interest in professional photography software revenues. Pro Photo revenues can not amount to a hill of beans for Google. There only interest is from a competitive standpoint for mobil app technology. Say good-bye to any new development for such a great line-up from Nik. Very sad news.
I love my Nik Plug-Ins, and while I’m excited that the prices are such that most amateurs will avoid them, I’m still wondering why there have been no updates or sales since the acquisition by Google. The main page still announces the acquisition, and there is nothing else new. Yes, the training classes continue, but I don’t see anything new and exciting coming out from Nik, and certainly no updates.
I just read that Google is sweeping-out Snapseed for the desktop as part of its “spring cleaning”. I have used Nik software for many years and have upgraded every time there has been a new release. I hope Google’s abandonment of Snapseed for the desktop is not a harbinger of future photographic tools abandonment. Nik products rock. It would be a tragedy for a monster like Google to kill-off valuable tools we have all faithfully used and paid for. Plus, I hope Google is taking care of those brilliant software engineers who know us photographers so well they invent tools we didn’t even know we needed and delivered them to us in such elegant packages.
